On Monday January 22nd, most of the Transition Year group participated in a course on how to coach other GAA players. On the morning of the course, Michael and Kevin went through the first four modules of the course. These modules are compulsory for anyone that wants to help coaching a GAA team, even at club level. We took notes about the characteristics of coaching and all involved in how to help players reach their full potential and succeed in their sport.
In the afternoon, the group was split into 4 sub-groups. Each group got a different skilled that they had to teach, demonstrate and basically coach the others in the year. As I was part of group 1, we taught the class the roll lift. Damien Coleman then paid us a visit to tell us about the reason why this course is so important and beneficial for young people to take part in.
After lunch, we went down to the hall to run the dills we had prepared before-hand. Our set of drills were majorly successful and I enjoyed the experience of trying to help other people in my year that I would not usually get the chance to interact with in normal circumstances. The whole year really enjoyed this experience and I would definitely recommend this course to other Transition Years that would be unsure whether or not to take part due to their lack of sports experience.
