On Monday December 18th, it was my turn to go to An Gairdin for an up-cylcing workshop courtesy of Gerry and Laura. At first when I heard about this workshop I will admit I was slightly apprehensive due to the creative nature of the activity. From stepping foot in the workshop I knew I would enjoy my day there with all my heart. There was a lovely, calm atmosphere which was reflected in the work of the group. As we were in an interactive environment, I relaxed into the craft and gave it my full attention for the three hours.
We began the day with a plank of wood. We then painted, sanded and transformed our planks of wood into pieces of art using different methods that we learned along the way. After some malfunctions and some problems with the hairdryers, we eventually completed our finished result and overall, I would like to think we did a good job.
From this day, I brought away a lot more than just a pretty board of ply-wood. I gained skills from this workshop that I may be able to use in the future when I need to redesign certain items of furniture etc. and I will also know what product and tools to use to get the perfect finish. Overall, I would recommend this workshop to other transition year students and I would like to think it has broadened my artistic ability and opened my eyes to different forms of art that may not be that obvious.
