On Tuesday 28th November, myself and 10 other students from PCS travelled with Mr. Molamphy to the engineering building on the NUIG campus. We began the day with a quick introduction to the whole world of engineering. This was followed by a lecture about autonomous cars which should be on the market in the very near future. This was an example of electrical/ electronic engineering.
After light refreshments and a break, we returned to the lecture Hall in the Alice Perry Building. We then received an engaging talk about civil engineering which was very interesting and probably my favourite of the day. There was a great variety of issues and projects to be discussed during this presentation which made it easier to listen to. The civil engineering talk was then followed by a biomedical engineering presentation. Many different ideas and process' were discussed in this talk eg. Leonardo Da Vinci's contribution to anatomy studies and how a heart stint is implanted in the body.
After a long lunch, we were educated on the 'Gleec' project competition. University students are challenged to make an energy effecient car to combat the energy effeciency problem the world faces today. While discussing this, we heard from specialist in aerodynamics, electical engineering and energy systems. These specialist explained the main causes of pollution and common issues such as car sickness.
Overall, this day was a great success and after this taster day in Galway I would seriously consider a career in engineering and studying my particular field at NUIG.
