Beginning on March 12th, I participated in a two-day song writing workshop, ran by Darragh and Sean. On the first day, we threw around ideas about what style of music we like and in particular, the songs we like to listen to on a daily basis. We voted on which songs we preferred and the ones that we wanted to base our song off. We then set about analysing the songs and stripping them down to tempo, pattern and style. After break we split into groups and thought about lyrics that would be sung in the song. I wasn't very good at this and found it hard to come up with lyrics from newspapers. We spent the rest of the day thinking about how we would put our song and music together.
We began or second day by learning about the science of sound while others left the room to perform our song. We watched videos about the production of sound and frequencies. After learning about sound, we set about producing the music to accompany the singing and Sean explained how to layer music using software and we tried to think up a name for our group/song. I thought he music production was very confusing and I did not find it interesting, however I understand why they showed us because there were other musical people there that found it interesting. We made all the decisions about the way our song was going to be produced and we really felt the responsibility to do with our job and felt in control. I would recommend this workshop to other transition year students however, I would advise them also to prepare for a lot of music talk that most people won't understand.
