On Tuesday March 20th, five of Portumna Community School's enteprise teams departed the school at 7.30am. The student Enterprise Awards for Galway city and county were held in the Clayton Hotel. On arrival, we began setting up our stalls, as I was the only participant from portumna to be in a one-person group, it took me slightly longer than the rest of the groups to set up my display and also my backdrop. My product was Rocky Road Biscuit Cake. My company name was Pallas Biscuit Cake. I called my produc tthis specific name because thearea of tynagh I am from is called Pallas. As well as this reason, there were and are focal points easily identifiable from any map which are named Pallas. For example, Pallas House (which is depicted on my packaging), Pallas Castle and Pallas Karting.
There were three rounds of judging. At each stage of judging, I answered questions about marketing, production, finance and plans for the future. The judges were very comprehensive and asked a few questions that I had not anticipated, however I thnk I did a good job of andswering them and at the very least, I tried to make a good impression. As the Student Enterprise Program is run by the local Enterprise Board, there were many figures from different areas of the board as well as past yougn entrepreneurs.
The judging was complete by 1pm. We then went to lunch that was provided for us by the Clayton Hotel. After lunch, we returned to the function room to pack up our stalls and await the results of who had won the many awards they had to offer. They had awards for various feats, including, best interview, best business report, best display, best use of technology and most energy efficient. Portumna has a great track record for winning awards at the Student Enteprise Program and this year was no different.
I won second Prize with my Rocky Road idea. I was not expecting this as I had done the whole process on my own. As well as this, I received a €200 prize. Unfortunately, this was the only prize received for our Transition Year at the Awards this year. We all enjoyed the trip back to Portumna and had great fun at the Awards.
